Hurricane Sandy – effects of climate change?

In New Jersey, a city was almost divided by the tropical storm Sandy (NASA image)

Not only for most scientists is clear in view of increasing disasters, that the problems of climate change has to work against. Thus, by the behavior of people the world’s oceans are becoming warmer, thereby always arise strength storms, such as the recent monster storm “Sandy”. The winter storm “Athena” was directly behind.

On 29 October the super storm Sandy hit the east coast of the United States and particularly heavy blow  the states of New York and New Jersey. The storm was formed in the Caribbean Sea, then moved northward over Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti and the Bahamas, where severe storms and heavy rains were the result. In Haiti more than 50 people were killed, over 18,000 families homeless and many shelters were destroyed for the survivors of the Haiti earthquake in 2010. Even in Costa Rica effects of the storm were felt. There were several days of torrential rain and strong winds. Then the storm moved on toward U.S. east Coast as it carried a high pressure area could not pull of the sea. This high pressure area was the adoption of some of the meteorologists consequence of global warming, because the ice for cooling in the Arctic Ocean this year was heavily melted. As a result the storm could fill up on the way from the Atlantic to the Caribbean and the U.S. east coast a lot of power and has developed from a tropical storm to a hurricane.

Storm covers a width as large as India

Sandy came with a large force: On the sea, according to the mirror was a gust of 175 km / h measured. Then the storm swept at a speed of over 121 km / h in New York.Meteorologists had previously warned of the dangers of this storm. They were right, but everything was exceeded. According to estimates damages of up to $ 50 billion incurred. Thus superstorm “Sandy” goes as one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history. About 93 people died in this natural disaster. If you look at the size of this storm, it is hardly surprising since Sandy’s cloud vortex included a width of almost 3000 kilometers. This is the approximate size of India. Even tropical storms often do not reach such proportions that even though driven by warm water usually can grow unchecked. Still 800 miles from the center of the hurricane nearly the highest storm intensity was measured. Hurricane Sandy was just a hurricane of stage two of the five. This hurricane was such a powerful because of the Atlantic is unusually warm and additionally got energy from the Gulf Stream.

Water masses from six months in two days

The clouds of Sandy eventually rose to an altitude of 20 kilometers, where the mass of water cooled off tremendously and frozen at less than minus 50 degrees Celsius. The so-called eye of a giant hurricane soaks up water vapor from the great oceans. It builds up in an unimaginable amount to raindrops, with much heat, which increases the air pressure. These masses of water from rain finally. Most precipitation of the super storm rained from just south of Maryland. In the town of Easton was within two days 320 liters of rain per square meter measured. It rained water masses of about half a year for two days. The unusually large width of Sandy and unfortunately this upcoming full moon, the greater the tidal range, made sure that the storm already thousands of miles before the water in front of them pushed and thus had provided powerful floods in the United States.

On the east coast of the United States at the entrance of New York harbor, a wave of ten meters above sea level was measured by a buoy. Off the coast of New York, the ocean partially lifted to 4.38 meters. New York was for such risks not sufficiently protected. Subways and substations lost in the floods, even in New York the power went out.Added to this was that Sandy super storm on the mainland with arctic winds from the north collided and the wet air cooled quickly. At higher altitudes as in Redhouse in Maryland during the storm dropped 75 inches of snow.

Impacts of Climate Change

Scientists are now analyzing whether this super storm is an impact of climate change. For it speaks well that sea levels are rising sharply due to global warming, especially on the northeast coast of the United States, resulting in storm surges greater impact. However, not only sea level rise but also the warming of the seas apparently lead to this. Because hurricanes and major storms occur on the oceans. The warmer the water the more power the storms ultimately get. Added to this was at that time a high pressure area, which was due to a few ice in the Arctic Ocean over the Atlantic. Therefore the high pressure area deducted the way over the sea around there.

Winter storm “Athena”

The winter storm “Athena” brought primarily the states of New York and New Jersey on November 7, icy cold, snow and strong winds. In some areas, over 20 inches of snow cam down.

Enough of the bad weather, make vacation and travel to Costa Rica Hotel Samara beach.
